The United States established the policy of containment with the Truman Doctrine. The Truman Doctrine was a piece of legislation that would give $400 million in aid to Greece and Turkey. Truman did this out of fear that these countries, due to their geographic location, would fall under the control of the communist Soviet Union. From this point on,the goal of the United States during the Cold War was to prevent the spread of communism on a global scale.
