Uncle Tom's Cabin, a novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe, was an anti-slavery novel that tried to rise sympathy for slaves in the South.

Slavery was an important factor in the civil war, with the South fighting to be allowed to keep it and the north fighting against it. Effectively, the book was presenting the North's position.
