The argument that was most central to Karl Marx's theory of society is that human history is best understood through the history of a society's economic system. Marx believed that human society progressed through a struggle between two distinct social class, the protetariats (workers/lower class) and the bourgeoisie (the upper class). In this system, Marx believed governments existed to protect the wealthy, not the common good.
