When a halo carbon reacts with a base alcohol and salt are formed. Let's use an alkyl substituent derived from ethane:
C2H5Cl + NaOH -> C2H5OH + NaCl
 From the reaction we can see that chloroethane reacts with sodium hydroxide to form ethanol and sodium chloride salt. The two products are C2H5OH, which is the alcohol formed while the second NaCl is the salt obtained.
