The analogy that can be made is when you play the game of tug of war. There is sharing of electrons such that each element is stable. The analogy would be to have the same number of people for each side. However, the amount of strength per person varies. So, if one group have stronger people, it would still have a greater force compared to the other one even though the number is equal. In this case, oxygen has a greater pull because it is more electronegative than hydrogen.
