What compound forms during the reaction between elemental sodium and elemental chlorine?

When two elements react to combine another compound, an addition reactions occurs. In this case we have a metal and a non metal in a addition reaction which forms a salt Sodium Chloride (NaCl).

 The balanced reaction is:

Na+  +  Cl-  -->  NaCl
