Deirdre McCloskey faced three main obstacles in the transformation process including self-doubt, family opposition and of course medical expenses.

After spending a married life for a long time and also the parent of two kids, she changed from male to female in 1995, at 53 years old, she recorded her experience in a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, Crossing: A Memoir (1999).
