Why do living things sometime change direction?

Physically- say their is a block in a road like a crash they change direction to go around.

OR 

 Mentally- if their is two paths one of right and the other if wrong they may make a bad decision and is on the path of wrong but they want to change. In doing so they are changing direction.

Living things change direction because its normal it keeps things going.
