Case study refers to an experimental design (used to examine whether or not the intervention/procedures are in fact responsible for change), while "naturalistic observation" refers to a method and environment for data collection. A primer on experimental design and methods of data collection is beyond the scope of this forum, but some highlights which may be of help appear below. Naturalistic observation is a method of data collection which may be used as part of a case study.
