Portugal established plantations on islands off the coast of Africa, islands like Sao Tome and Principe. These plantations were the first established by European nations in Africa and were therefore the earliest examples of slave labor being exploited by European powers. These early plantations farmed mainly sugar and received their slaves from warring powers on the mainland of Africa.
