I'm assuming you are talking about polynomials.

For example, I have x^2 + 2x + 1, and I want to add 2x^2 + x + 2

Then the like terms here are:

x^2 and 2x^2,  2x and x, 1 and 2, they are quadratic, linear and constant, respectively.
