In animals with a closed circulatory system, gas exchange occurs across the thin walls of the nerves and blood vessels that are equally distributed in the different parts of particular organisms. This is where RBCs carry oxygenated blood to supply the body with oxygen as well as the essential nutrients that are needed for different bodily functions and to maintain its homeostasis.
