Use the Pythagorean theorem.

12^2+17^2=c^2

144+289=c^2

433=c^2

Last step is to sqrt both sides.

c=20.8

you will use the Pythagorean theorem...

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

12^2 + 17^2 = c^2

144 + 289 = c

433 = c

But then you have to find the square root of 433... which is 20.8

so c = 20.8

20.8 is your answer
