How did the Spartans and the Athenians defeat the Persians?

The Spartans and Athenians defeated the Persians in the Battle of Marathon, where a man ran to Athens after the battle to tell them that they won. He died after running those 5 miles and that's where we get the activity Marathon. Anyways that was a fun fact. Now the answer:
THEY WORKED TOGETHER AS A TEAM! THEY WERE ALLIES!
