Since the side that measures 16 is tangent to the circle, it is perpendicular to the side that measures 12.

IT makes a right triangle.

Since it is a right triangle we can apply the Pythagorean theorem:

c^2 = a^2 + b^2

Where:

c= hypotenuse (longest side )= ?

a & b =the other 2 legs of the triangle.

Replacing:

?^2 = 12 ^2 + 16^ 2

Solve for the missing side:

?^2 = 144+256

?^2 = 400

?=√400

? = 20
