3x + y = 1.....multiply by -1
5x + y = 3
-------------
-3x - y = -1 (result of multiplying by -1)
5x + y = 3
-------------add
2x = 2
x = 2/2
x = 1

3x + y = 1
3(1) + y = 1
3 + y = 1
y = 1 - 3
y = -2

solution is (1,-2)
