Here hypotenuse is c, opposite is a and adjacent is b.

c^2 = a^2 + b^2

16^2 = a^2 + 12^2

a^2 = 16^2 - 12^2

a^2 = 112

a = √112 or 10.58

As the question uses inches I think it would be better if you wrote 10.58 in.
