It helps you feel more empathetic because you feel sad that they had something bad happen to them, and you were ok. And since you are feeling bad for them it means that you r feeling empathetic for them
It is a natural feeling that needs to be acknowledged, accepted and processed. Know you're not alone. Survivor guilt is much more common than people realize.
