[tex] { - 3}^{4} = - (3 \times 3 \times 3 \times 3) \\ {( - 3)}^{4} = ( - 3 \times - 3 \times - 3 \times - 3)[/tex]

The difference is that (-3)^4 has a negative 3 with parenthesis around it, which means that if it was in PEMDAS, you would work that out first.
