What is the result of subtracting the second equation from the first?
-4x-2y=-2

Given:

  • -4x - 2y = -2  
  • x - 2y = 9

Subtracting:

  • -4x - 2y - (x - 2y) = -2 - 9
  • -4x - 2y - x + 2y = - 11
  • -5x = -11
  • 5x = 11
  • x = 11/5
  • x = 2.2

You can now find y:

  • 2.2 - 2y = 9
  • 2y = 2.2 - 9
  • 2y = - 6.8
  • y = -6.8/2
  • y = -3.4
