We will use the Pythagorean Theorem:

[tex] {17}^{2} = {8}^{2} + {x}^{2} \\ 289 = 64 + {x}^{2} \\ {x}^{2} = 289 - 64 \\ {x}^{2} = 225 \\ x = \sqrt{225} \\ x = 15[/tex]
