a^2 + b^2 = c^2...a and b are the legs and c is the hypotenuse
8^2 + 5^2 = c^2
64 + 25 = c^2
89 = c^2...take the sqrt of both sides...this eliminates the ^2
sqrt 89 = c
9.4 = c....shortest path is 9.4 km
