A magnetic field can be visualized as having magnetic field lines. These show the “direction” of the magnetic force.

These magnetic field lines always go from the NORTH to SOUTH pole outside the magnet (and south to north inside, but not important in this case). When two magnets face eachother with the same pole, the magnetic field lines will be in the opposite direction of eachother. This results in the magnets REPELLING eachother.
