We have

[tex]7x+5=-9[/tex].

1. Subtract 5 from both sides to get

[tex]7x=-9-5\Longrightarrow 7x=-14[/tex].

2. Divide both sides by 7 to get

[tex]x=\dfrac{-14}{7}=\boxed{-2}[/tex]

Hope this helps.
