Mrs. Mallard, the main character, is overjoyed at the news of the death of her husband. She is euphoric at the thought  of living life free from the confines of marriage. However, when she comes to find that her husband is alive, she is overcome by grief at the loss of her new freedom- that she dies of a heart attack.
