Jan Matzeliger forever altered the New England shoe industry with his invention of a "Lasting" Machine.

Matzeliger created a machine that mechanized the laborious and difficult working of assembling the upper part of a shoe to the sole. Prior to Matzeliger, lasting was the step of the process that often shut down production due to the finicky nature of the lasters.
