So firstly, multiply both sides of the second equation by -1: [tex] 6x+3y=-12\\ -6x-2y=4 [/tex]

Next, add the 2 equations together to get [tex] y=-8 [/tex]

Now that we have y, substitute the value into y of either equation and solve:

[tex] 6x+3(-8)=-12\\ 6x-24=-12\\ 6x=12\\ x=2\\ \\ 6x+2(-8)=-4\\ 6x-16=-4\\ 6x=12\\ x=2 [/tex]

In short, y = -8 and x = 2.
